The world of the investigation and the lead detectives
True Detective is an HBO anthology series whose first season, aired in 2014, is set in the state of Louisiana and follows two state police detectives across seventeen years of shared history. The narrative adopts a dual temporal structure: in 1995, the detectives investigate a ritual murder case; in 2012, both are separately interrogated by two other investigators who reopen the file. This temporal duality allows the story to be constructed through the contradictory and subjective memories of its protagonists, whose accounts of events do not always align.
Rust Cohle is a detective of solitary, nihilistic character and exceptional intelligence. Born in Texas, his past is marked by the death of his young daughter in a traffic accident and by his subsequent divorce, traumas that have led him to a deeply pessimistic and philosophical worldview. Before joining the Louisiana state police, he worked as an undercover agent for four years in drug trafficking operations in Texas, an experience that left him with severe psychological damage and introduced him to drug use. In 2012, during the interrogation, Cohle presents himself as an aged, alcoholic man who has left the police force and works in a bar.
Marty Hart is Cohle's assigned partner in 1995. In contrast to the inner chaos that Rust projects, Marty represents the façade of the conventional man: married, with two daughters, and apparently integrated into the community. However, his private life is riddled with hypocrisy. He has recurring extramarital affairs, most notably while Maggie, his wife, remains at home, and he also sees Lisa, a mistress. His self-satisfaction and his tendency to project the image of a family man stand in sharp contrast to his actual conduct. In 2012, Marty is also interrogated; by that point he is divorced from Maggie and has a distant relationship with his daughters.
The inciting incident: the murder of Dora Lange and the appearance of the ritual
The case that triggers the central investigation is the discovery of the body of Dora Lange, a young woman found in a Louisiana field in January 1995. The body is naked, kneeling, with hands bound in a prayer position and the head crowned with deer antlers. Her back bears tattoos featuring spirals and symbols of a dark nature. The scene has a clearly ritualistic staging, pointing to a killer with motivations that go beyond ordinary crime.
The victim was a prostitute with a history of drug use. The initial investigation reveals that Dora Lange frequented an itinerant religious congregation known as the Church of the Yellow King, associated with a preacher called Reverend Tuttle and with the evangelical revivals that travel through the rural areas of the state. Cohle, with his analytical ability and his undercover experience, identifies from the outset that the crime bears the hallmarks of a serial killer with established rituals, and that the perpetrator has probably been operating undetected for years.
The central conflict of the series revolves around the search for a killer whom the characters — and later the investigation — refer to as the Twig Reaper or, more iconically, the killer of the Yellow King, in reference to a mythological figure that appears in the sect's writings. The investigation leads Cohle and Hart into the deepest layers of rural Louisiana society: religious congregations concealing abuse, families with power lineages rooted in the region for generations, and a network of crimes against women and children that the authorities have deliberately ignored or suppressed.
The tension between the two protagonists is established from the first episode. Cohle is methodical, cold, and devoid of illusions; Hart is emotional, territorial, and frequently unable to handle the brutality of the crime scenes they investigate. Their differences in character generate constant friction, but also a functional complementarity that allows them to advance in the case. The 2012 interrogation also introduces the implicit suspicion that one or both of them may have been involved in the case in ways not yet revealed, adding a layer of narrative ambiguity from the very beginning.
The antagonist who gradually takes shape over the course of the investigation is Errol Childress, a disturbing-looking man who lives deep in the Louisiana bayous, a descendant of a landowning family with a long history of violence and inbreeding. However, his identity remains hidden for most of the season, while the investigation points to various figures of power — politicians, religious leaders, members of influential families — who form a network of institutional cover-up that has been protecting the ritual crimes for decades.
