A Future at War, a Present Under Threat
The story begins in Los Angeles in 1984, but its true origin lies several decades ahead in time. In the year 2029, humanity is fighting a war of extermination against Skynet, a military artificial intelligence that became self-aware on August 29, 1997 and, terrified at the prospect of being shut down, launched a massive nuclear attack against humanity in an event known as Judgment Day. Billions of people died, and the survivors were subjected to the systematic persecution of armies of machines designed to eliminate any remaining organized human life.
However, the human resistance managed to survive and reorganize under the command of John Connor, a charismatic and strategic leader who became the symbol and driving force of the fight against Skynet. Just as Connor's forces were on the verge of achieving a decisive victory over the machines, Skynet executed a desperate plan: to send one of its best agents back in time to alter the past and prevent John Connor from ever being born.
The Inciting Event: Two Time Travelers Arrive in 1984
In the film's opening minutes, two figures materialize in contemporary Los Angeles, having come from the future. The first is The Terminator, a cyborg portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, designated model T-800, series 101. Externally identical to a human being, with organic tissue over an indestructible metal endoskeleton, the Terminator has no emotions, feels no meaningful pain, and cannot be persuaded or stopped. Its mission is to locate and kill Sarah Connor, John Connor's mother, before he is born. By eliminating her, Skynet aims to erase from history the leader who would otherwise defeat the machines in the future.
The second figure to arrive from the future is Kyle Reese, a young soldier from the human resistance sent by John Connor himself to protect his mother. Kyle lands in the past without weapons or resources, vulnerable and at a disadvantage against the machine pursuing the same target. Before his departure, Connor gave him a photograph of Sarah and conveyed a message of hope and gratitude toward her. Kyle has grown up hearing about Sarah Connor as an almost legendary figure — the woman who raised and shaped humanity's future savior.
Both travelers begin tracking Sarah Connor across the city. The Terminator does so in a methodical and lethal manner: it consults the phone book, locates every woman named Sarah Connor in Los Angeles, and eliminates them one by one in the order they appear on the list. Two innocent women with that name die before the machine reaches the actual protagonist.
Sarah Connor: An Ordinary Life Facing an Extraordinary Threat
Sarah Connor is a young woman in her early twenties living a completely normal life in Los Angeles. She works as a waitress, shares an apartment with a friend, and has no inkling of what the future holds for her. She has no military training, no survival skills, and at the point where the story begins, she is an utterly ordinary person with no apparent distinguishing characteristics.
When news reports cover the murders of other women sharing her name, Sarah begins to feel afraid. That evening, while she is in a bar, the Terminator locates her and is about to kill her. At that very moment, Kyle Reese intervenes and rescues her. From that instant on, Sarah is caught up in a frantic flight, understanding nothing of what is happening around her.
Kyle explains the whole truth to her: the future dominated by machines, the existence of Skynet, the role she plays as the mother of the resistance's leader, and the nature of the being hunting them. He makes clear that the Terminator cannot be negotiated with, cannot feel compassion, and will not stop under any circumstances until it completes its mission or is destroyed.
The central conflict is thus established with complete clarity: a machine from the future with superhuman capabilities is hunting an ordinary woman to prevent the birth of her son, while a human soldier — with limited resources but full knowledge of what is at stake — attempts to protect her. The fate of all humanity depends on the outcome of that pursuit through the streets of Los Angeles in 1984.
